SmartAgroGenious: Soil and Microclimate Monitoring
Soil and microclimate monitoring supporting the circular cultivation trials in Crete.
The Crete application uses continuous soil and microclimatic observations from the cultivation site. These observations are interpreted alongside laboratory soil analyses before and after incorporation of faba bean residues. The monitoring period and field treatment provide the context for comparison between the control, incorporation at flowering and incorporation after harvest.
Soil and microclimate monitoring is used in the faba-bean and tomato cultivation trials in Crete. SmartAgroGenious is MACC's precision-agriculture platform used in the Crete agricultural-residue trials. It provides continuous information on soil and microclimatic parameters, supporting the observation of conditions during the faba bean and tomato cultivation sequence. The platform is used alongside laboratory soil analyses carried out before and after green-manure incorporation. The field experiment compares a control without green manure with incorporation at flowering and incorporation after harvest. Continuous monitoring adds a time-dependent view of growing conditions to these discrete analytical measurements. Within the pilot, this combination supports process optimisation and the assessment of the agricultural intervention. The monitoring information helps place crop and soil observations in their environmental context, rather than relying only on measurements taken at individual sampling dates. The CSSBoost application connects these observations with the cultivation protocol and the comparison of different residue-management practices.
